JPS Literacy Belief Statements
Purposeful instruction that encourages students to grow as engaged critical readers
We Believe:
Literacy instruction is not one particular program or approach
In purposeful implementation of the 5 Big Ideas (phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, fluency, vocabulary) of reading instruction
In providing differentiated instruction to engage all learners
In realizing that reading is a dynamic activity
Teachers and students need to evolve
Teachers provide an environment that supports and encourages whole group, small group, and individual reading instruction
Formative Assessment takes place
daily
and is used to drive instruction (conferring, performance tasks, running records, exit tickets)
Developing students into “Thinking Readers” should be our end goal
Literacy instruction is intentionally integrated into all content areas
